I think I enjoyed this one even more than the first! It fixed some of the small things I didn't love about the first book, and fans of the first one will really love this installment. Way more awesome Animalgams to meet, and I hope some of the characters we met in here come back later in the series!
Simon and his friends escape from the L.A.I.R. and manage to get on a train to rescue Simon's mom. When they stop along the way, they stay in a weird, secret home and something gets stolen from each one of them. The trip is much harder after they're missing their money, shoes, and something important from the villain Orion.
I liked this better than the first book because it had more fight scenes and better action. There were allies, enemies, and some allies that turn into enemies. Simon has to m

I was gifted an ebook via Netgalley.
Overall, I would say this is a solid sequel to Simon Thorn and the Wolf's Den. I really loved seeing more of Ariana and Jam, as well as, being introduced to new Animalgams. I'm liking how family dynamics are ever present throughout the novel. It's interesting to see the different characters struggle with finding a family in those they share blood with and then realizing they have family to those they don't share blood with. The Reptile Kingdom was fascinating

Review:
Protagonist: After losing his Uncle Darryl, the man who raised him, and his mom's kidnapping, Simon doesn't quite feel at home in the L.A.I.R. Sure he has his newly discovered brother, Nolan, who he still has a touchy relationship with, and his Uncle Malcolm, the mammal kingdom's new Alpha, but he misses his mother more than anything, even though she lied to him and was rarely around. So, when evidence of where she may be held shows up he needs to act quickly. Escaping the L.A.I.R. with h

Simon Thorn thought he was just an average kid growing up in New York City. But he soon learned he was not normal and could talk to animals. Simon discovered that he was an Animalgam, a human that could turn into an animal, and he soon learned to turn himself into one. Now, he is part of a special group and he lives at L.A.I.R., or the Leading Animalgam Institute for the Remarkable, located way below Central Park zoo. His uncle Darryl, who helped raised him, shared his secret. Simon and a few fr..more

When I read Simon Thorn and the Wolf's Den, I thought that Aimee Carter hadn't yet found her footing though the series had great promise, which is why I decided to keep reading. I am so glad I did because I truly enjoyed this sequel and could not put it down. It was incredibly fun, reading about Simon and his friends' exploits as they set out to save his mom. Having three of the animal kingdoms represented and watching Simon secretly use his Beast King abilities was a great change to the first b..more

I enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series. Simon sometimes makes poor choices and is very stubborn, but he is also very loyal to his friends and family, and of course he is still grieving the loss of important people in his life from the first book.
In this adventure Simon and his friends travel across the country to follow a clue his mother left on a postcard. Along the way their lives are in mortal danger (again and again) and they meet Animalgams who live much differently than

I don't know why but I'm starting to find Simon a bit whiny. I have to question if the Beast King has a certain nature passed through his descendants no matter what thy were like previously. I remember reading in 'Born at Midnight' series it had a passage saying that since these supernatural creatures have more to worry about control of their powers, their emotions can be a little hard to handle; I have to wonder if the same is true for Simon because he has multiple animals to change into, not j..more
After deeply enjoying the first book I immediately jumped into the second one. The pace started off nice right from the start but it did begin to slow a little less than half-way through. The author did a great job at keeping your interest due to the new mysterious characters that showed up though. The humor was nice and not over the top, especially towards the end. I was left with a lack of understanding on certain characters who should be known by now though but I'm hoping this gets cleared up..more
One of my students is really into this series and wanted me to read it, but I just couldn’t get into it. Simon Thorn is like many middle grade protagonists in that he makes thoughtless, self-centered decisions to protect his friends and family, but for whatever reason I couldn’t stomach it as well from him. Maybe because he never actually receives any training; he just runs away again and again and somehow manages to succeed against enemies far stronger and smarter. I’m really glad this series w..more
n this second book in the series, Simon finds a postcard from his mother and he and his friends go to the reptile kingdom headquarters to find her and rescue her from her father, Orion. Simon continues to keep secrets from his brother and uncle and fights Animalgams in an attempt to rescue his mother and stop his evil uncle and the evil ex-Alpha. There is action, adventure and more action in this fun to read middle grade novel. I look forward to reading the other books in the series!

I was so busy while listening to the audiobook than I might have missed some cool parts or my reactions weren't as on point with the plot progression .I like where the story is going and Malcom is possibly the best adult figure in all the middle grade I've read so far.Look forward to the rest of the series and also a more possitive character development for Winter)
I really enjoyed this installment of the Simon Thorn Series! The new locations and how everything fits together is great. It’s awesome to see how the characters interact and how the relationships have developed from the first book.
Appropriate for: age 12+
I really liked this sequel. I find all of the main characters likable in their own ways. I like the dynamic they all have. It is a good message that family is most important.
Simon and his friends are topnotch. Felix is a great character as well.
Aggressively moralizing. Despite the decent level of action, this series is not for me after all. Recommended grades 4-7.

Didn't capture me at all, like the first book did.
I thought that this book was action packed and full of adventure. I cannot wait for the third one to come out.
Kat Mandu says..
In this thrilling, middle-grade series featuring animal shapeshifters, Simon Thorn is a twelve-year-old boy who’s about to discover his true heritage – and the dangers that come with it.
Simon’s young and living in New York City. His best friend is a mouse named Felix because Simon actually doesn’t have any friends. The one he did have has abandoned him for the “cooler crowd” due to an incident in which Simon was caught talking to a few animals. Now he’s the “freaky” kid that no

Another fantastic adventure with Simon and his shape-shifting friends!
Our 8 year old son & I love this series. Definitely engaging with good values & straight up adventure
My name is Simon, and no one, not even my twin brother Nolan, the King Beast heir, knows that I'm able to transform into any animal. Other Animalgams believe my brother is the only person to have that ability, so he has great power over the different animal kingdoms. Which is why they'll have no problem killing him, and it's a reason why I keep my abilities secret. My mother is being held captive by Orion, the bird king, in Arizona, and I will not stop until I've rescued her. My uncle, Alpha of..more
